Understanding Addiction: Where Does Biology Come into Play?

Understanding Addiction - The Bergand Group

One of the most frightening things about substance abuse, to many people, is how it can affect anyone. No one group is at risk, and no one is “immune.” A school of thought believes that understanding addiction lies in examining how it is related to our biology and genetic makeup, so let’s explore that a bit to separate the fact from the myth.

The Many Pathways Toward Understanding Addiction

“In essence, the biological viewpoint of addiction states that we are predisposed to addictive behavior through physiology and chemistry.” The idea is that the genes of particular people, unfortunately, makes them more predisposed to habits of substance abuse. As you may remember from previous discussions, because those substances alter brain chemistry, that use only further cements the habits in a physiological sense.

Thinking of addiction as being purely-biological in origin allows people to better prepare, true. It alerts some to their predispositions and helps them to make more informed choices in the future. On the other side of that, some people with a family history of substance abuse may feel more hopeless and believe that they are destined for the same fate as parents or other relatives when this is far from the truth.

So, while it’s true “that certain biological risk factors increase the odds of addictive outcomes,” we can’t completely label a bloodline as absolutely going to develop issues of substance abuse with each person on the family tree. A predisposition is not a sentencing, and understanding addiction means both recognizing increased risk factors, but not condemning.
