Transcending Addiction: Rethinking Recovery

Transcending Addiction

Addiction is extremely prevalent in the United States and it’s a crisis that is mostly being ignored. Approximately 8-10% of individuals over the age of 12 are addicted to drugs or alcohol. And if that’s not shocking enough, it’s also reported by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that an average of 130 Americans dies from opioids each day. Unfortunately, what doesn’t help is the myths the general population has about people struggling with addiction. By understanding that addiction is a chronic brain condition, not a moral failing, we can help those who need it. The first step in supporting our loved ones in their journey of transcending addiction may be breaking down our misconceptions.

Myth One: Addiction Only Happens to a “Certain” Type of Person

People are sometimes under the impression that only the “weak” or the “uneducated” get addicted.  This is simply not true. Addiction can happen to anyone regardless of their age, gender, socio-economic background, upbringing, religion, or IQ. In fact, addiction is now linked to three correlating factors: genetics, environment, and development.  One, or a combination of several, of these factors can leave a person more prone to addiction than you may have thought.

Myth Two: That Kid Should Have Just Said No

Several studies have verified that most young teenagers experiment with drugs and alcohol. The truth of the matter is that most kids aren’t saying no. Unfortunately, some kids have predetermined factors that make them more high-risk to addiction, and telling them to “just say no” is not enough, we need to help them recover.

Myth Three: People With Addiction Can’t Be Saved

There are plenty of well-equipped rehabilitation facilities that help individuals in their journey in transcending addiction. While sobriety is a lifelong journey, it is possible to recover, and many people do.

How Addiction Myths Can Harm

One thing that will prevent people from succeeding in their addiction recovery is if those around them perpetuate the above myths. When we tell people struggling with addiction that they deserve their addiction or that they can never recover, we are stealing their hope. One of the best ways you can support a person in addiction treatment is to educate yourself on their struggle.
