Addiction Recovery Calls for Social Connection

Addiction Recovery - The Bergand Group

A critical piece of addiction recovery is connecting with others. Social bonds are one of the many stepping stones that allow people to navigate more smoothly from the throes of substance abuse into a solid recovery.

The Value of Other People During Addiction Recovery

The dangers of feeling isolated or lonely are great in a general sense, but the threat is even more real when it intensifies the experience of substance abuse. Some people who drink to excess or who use drugs find “friends” in those substances when there are (seemingly) none elsewhere. In our world today, when people are more connected by technology than ever, loneliness runs rampant.

“On the journey to recovery from addiction, loneliness can itself be a glaring risk factor for relapse and an overwhelming obstacle to achieving sobriety in the first place.” There are a lot of steps involved with addiction recovery, and many of them are related to connecting with others. Biologically, we’re drawn to each other, as this was previously necessary to survive. However, substance abuse can be inherently isolating, and so more effort has to be made to connect to those struggling with it.

Reaching out to, and connecting with, others is a necessity within recovery that can help to foster feelings of worth and validity. Positive relationships can provide support and fill the void that was previously filled with substances. A dedicated community of any kind will begin to develop the foundation on which true recovery begins.
