Understanding Opiate Addiction and Detox

Understanding Opiate Addiction and Detox - The Bergand Group

Opiate addiction affects those who take drugs including: heroin, codeine, methadone, and oxycodone. Opiate addiction is dangerous and often fatal. In order to detox from opiates, addicts must use caution and are advised to participate in detox programs. “The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) estimates that only 20 percent of heroin addicts actively seek treatment.” Understanding opiate addiction and detox is important on your road to recovery.

Understanding Opiate Addiction and Detox

Opiate addiction often begins with the use of prescription drugs. Medication that may have been prescribed for back pain can easily become habitual. Long-term use of these drugs leads to dependence. When you stop taking them, your body goes through withdrawal. This leads to users seeking these drugs illegally.

Opiate addiction withdrawal is uncomfortable and should be done under the care of a professional. There are three main steps in the opiate detox process.

1. Patients are evaluated. This is done through physical tests, which specify which drugs are present, and by looking at the patient’s vital signs. In this process, patients are also evaluated for psychological and emotional complications.
2. Patients begin opiate detox which may or may not include the use of medications, although it is quite common for medication to be administered. During this time clinicians inform patients of what to expect during the treatment and recovery period.
3. The last step of opiate detox is readying the patient for the recovery process, as detox deals only with physical aspect of drug dependence. In this step, clinicians refer patients to a team of psychiatrists and counselors who will provide support for the remainder of the recovery process.
