How to Find a Therapist That’s Right for You

How to Find a Therapist that is Right for You - The Bergand Group

Deciding to see a therapist is a big step. Not only are you accepting that you are powerless over your addiction, but you are deciding to change your life. While some addicts seek counseling to help them transition after their detox program, many decide to find a therapist that can guide them through their new lives now that they have broken free from many of their addictive behaviors.

Find a therapist that understands you, one that does not make you feel judged by your feelings or past actions.

It is really important to find a therapist that you can be open and honest with. In order to get to the root of an addiction, a therapist will guide you through sessions by examining your life – from your childhood to the current moment. What were some of your influences? Did you deal with anxiety or depression as a teen? When did addictive behaviors start? These are just some of the questions that your therapist might ask you in order to fully understand you and your addiction.

How can I find a therapist so I can start healing?

Looking for a therapist can be overwhelming. There might be many counseling centers to choose from, and countless therapists within each practice. How do you know which therapist is right for you?

  • Get a referral. Asking a trusted friend, family member or doctor for a referral is usually a good start. Some addiction recovery centers, such as The Bergand Group, are a one stop shop for all steps of the recovery process, as they have therapists on staff that will help you after your detox program. You want to look at the therapist’s credentials – make sure they are licensed, have experience with addiction and possibly co-occurring disorders, and take your insurance.
  • Become well-versed in the various types of therapy. When you find a therapist, look at what style of therapy they provide. “The kind of therapeutic practice that will work best for you will depend greatly on your history, issues, and personality.” Many therapists offer cognitive behavioral therapy, but therapists often practice many modalities. If you have found a therapist that is right for you, be open to their suggestions of healing. These might include yoga, meditation, seeing a nutritionist, and even regular exercise.
  • Find out about what insurance they accept. When you find a therapist you need to look into their insurance policy. “Do they take your insurance? Do they bill insurance directly or do they give you a receipt and you have to do the work? If they do not take insurance, do they work on a sliding scale? Therapy is no quick fix, so know that you can meet the financial commitment it takes to do the work.”
  • Schedule a visit. The only way to know if you truly connect with a therapist is to make an appointment. Go in and talk to them about what you are working on and what your background with this addiction is. If you and your therapist have a good rapport, make a follow-up appointment. If you feel that this therapist isn’t for you, they will understand. In order to find a therapist that works for you, you must be honest with yourself as well as the therapist.

The healing process after an addiction is extremely important in order to remain sober. Take this time seriously. Just because you have stopped using doesn’t mean the healing process is over! Working with a qualified addiction counselor will lessen your chances of relapse.
