How Can an Addict Stay Healthy During Recovery?

How Can an Addict Stay Healthy During Recovery? - The Bergand Group

In order to stay healthy during recovery, a recovering addict should modify their lifestyle. When paired with an addiction recovery program, healthy eating and mindfulness-based stress reduction will positively influence your road to recovery.

While many people to allow themselves to indulge when they are overcoming a drug or alcohol addiction, a recovering addict can stay healthy during recovery by choosing healthy meal options and keeping away from junk foods. Although a recovering addict may feel that junk food is harmless in comparison to the drug they are detoxing from, evidence suggests otherwise. “These eating habits may be hindering you more than they’re helping you on your path to recovery.”

Ingesting drugs and alcohol wreaks havoc on the body. Many recovering addicts find that they are nutrient deficient, and this is due to the substances they were abusing. “Alcohol, for example, impedes nutrient breakdown and assimilation resulting in nutritional deficiencies. Opiates tend to cause gastrointestinal issues, and, during opiate withdrawal, severe vomiting and diarrhea can lead to nutrient depletion. Stimulants suppress appetite which can lead to an insufficient intake of calories and nutrients.” Consuming drugs and alcohol isn’t the only thing that leads to an unhealthy recovering addict – the lifestyle surrounding addiction also plays a role. While some substances cause you to eat too much, others cause you to eat too little. “At the height of their drinking, alcoholics often derive as much as 50 percent of their daily calorie allowance from alcohol itself.” The need for drugs and alcohol often overcomes the body’s craving for healthy, wholesome foods.

When a recovering addict chooses to stay healthy during recovery, eat well and adhere to their addiction treatment plan, they benefit in more ways than one. Proper nutrition floods the body with nutrients, thus making a recovering addict feel much better physically and mentally. It also plays a part in helping to “build and repair organ tissue and strengthen the immune system.” Due to the damaging effects that drugs or alcohol have on the body, if a recovering addict can stay healthy during recovery the “good nutrition provides them with the nutritional building blocks they need to begin restoring these damaged tissues.”

To stay healthy during recovery, recovering addicts should, along with completing an addiction treatment program, focus on eating nutrient-rich foods, and getting plenty of rest.
