Group Therapy Sessions Foster Healthy Attachments

Group Therapy Sessions in Baltimore - The Bergand Group

Since the dawn of human history, people have always had a propensity to form groups. Those who are like-minded come together for a variety of reasons and our tendency to do so is rooted in a biological basis. This is the reason that group therapy sessions are so popular and effective when it comes to treatment for substance abuse.

Are Group Therapy Sessions Right for You?

Obviously, the type of therapy that is most effective for a person will vary from individual to individual. Everyone is different in a general sense and certainly in their experiences with addiction and substance use. Even so, group therapy sessions are touted as having high levels of success across the board. “One reason for this efficacy is that groups intrinsically have many rewarding benefits—such as reducing isolation and enabling members to witness the recovery of others—and these qualities draw clients into a culture of recovery.” It should be a consideration, at the very least, so that the patient can explore all of his or her options.

Something else to consider in examining the benefits of this form of treatment for substance abuse is that, often times, addiction is accompanied by struggles with mental illness, such as depression. Feelings of isolation that may come along with depression, to give an example, can be combated with this regular therapy in which a group of people who are all working toward recovery can offer support and understanding for one another.

Human beings are influenced by the presence of others throughout their lives whether they realize it or not. The effects that other people have on us, whether through thoughts, actions, or other variations, are part of what shape people as they learn and grow. It may have been other people who played a role, large or small, in a patient’s developing an addiction. Inversely, it may be other people who are, at least in part, responsible for recovery from addiction. A format in which this positive influence may arise is, of course, within group therapy sessions.

In these sessions, there are counselors and/or group leaders who specialize in treatment for substance abuse and who are able to expertly facilitate the workings of the group. Of course, there are also other patients, people at varying levels within recovery, who have at least some experiences that they share with each other. Since many friends and family do not have those experiences and have never suffered from an addiction, others in group therapy sessions are able to offer something to the individual that those outside the group are unlikely to possess.

“Groups organized around therapeutic goals can enrich members with insight and guidance; and during times of crisis, groups can comfort and guide people who otherwise might be unhappy or lost.” Some of the many goals that can be achieved in this setting, aside from the general recovery from addiction, include the ability ” to foster healthy attachments, provide positive peer reinforcement, act as a forum for self‐expression, and teach new social skills.” Obviously, these would all be helpful in trying to create a new, healthier, and more stable life and environment during treatment for substance abuse.

There are a number of advantages to opting for group therapy sessions, some of which will be more or less applicable from person to person.
