Detox and Rehab Aren’t the Same

Detox and Rehab - The Bergand Group

One of the biggest issues that occur within peoples’ understanding of addiction is that, too often, the language is misused and misunderstood.  It can be detrimental to the person in recovery, for example, to be referred to by terms that have a more negative connotation, such as “user” rather than, say, “patient.”  In this case, there is a lot of confusion regarding the words surrounding treatment of addiction, and many people don’t understand words like detox and rehab and use them interchangeably.

Some of the Differences Between Detox and Rehab Include…

The most effective experience from beginning to end through a treatment program is built on a foundation of understanding.  How that starts is with at least some distinction between the options that are available for the individual who is struggling with substance abuse.  Detox and rehab aren’t the same experiences and noting the differences can allow the patient and his or her loved ones to choose a first step that is best for their unique needs.

For many people starting on the road to recovery, detox is the beginning.  Detoxification is a program with the intention to help the individual to overcome the immediate, physical dependency that they have on a substance.  Because there are often overwhelming symptoms of withdrawal that accompany this period, supervising medical professionals also typically provide medication that can help with this very challenging stage.  Detox involves a “controlled environment” for the safety of all involved, considering that the severity of the experience can vary depending on the substance in question and on its intensity of use.  To put it simply, this part of the process centers around breaking the physical hold that the drug or alcohol has on the individual.

Following detox, where their physical situation is assessed and adjusted, many people move to further stages of treatment, including, for some, rehabilitation, where mental and emotional symptoms will then be observed.  Detox and rehab are obviously both geared toward rebuilding the patient’s life and health, but the latter is really where this happens in a concrete way, providing him or her with the ability to return to the world free of addiction.  In rehabilitation, patients come to terms with the reality of their situations, where they came from and where they need to go moving forward.  The time frame varies depending on the individual and on the facility in which the program is based, but the conclusion of the program typically means that the patient is able now to form healthy habits.

Rehabilitation from substance abuse is a sort of umbrella which encompasses a number of programs, such as outpatient and inpatient treatment, group therapy and individual therapy.  These treatment services provide safe environments that are geared toward nurturing success in those who are present.  It also fosters understanding of both the individual’s experience with addiction, how they got to be where they are, and the facts of addiction in general, which can help to clear up common and unhealthy myths.

Together, detox and rehab cover the mental, physical, and emotional aspects of recovery.  The specific details of these processes vary from person to person, but their goals are ultimately the same: to guide you toward a substance-free lifestyle.  This is a continuous journey and the steps are far from easy, but they’re also necessary in order to overcome dependence.  If you aren’t sure of the differences between detox and rehab or you want to know more about the other options available in order to get the most effective treatment possible, get in touch with The Bergand Group.
