Addressing Nutrition in Drug and Alcohol Recovery

Addressing Nutrition in Drug and Alcohol Recovery

The first step to safe and healthy recovery consists of going through a detox program. This ensures that you can clear your body of drugs and alcohol in a safe and effective way. During the detoxification process, your body might yearn for sweets, unhealthy foods, and something to satisfy that impulse that you used to fill with drugs or alcohol. It is important to keep nutrition in mind during this time. Now, what can you do to ensure a healthy mind and healthy body? Let’s start at the beginning.

When you are addicted to alcohol, for example, your body’s storage of essential nutrients is depleted. Drinking alcohol alerts your body to rapidly release insulin in order to deal with the rise in blood sugar. When this occurs, your body switches from being hyperglycemic to hypoglycemic. During this time, many side effects occur. One might feel tired, anxious, angry, and even have innate cravings for alcohol. These feelings can linger when someone is detoxing from an alcohol addiction. It is important that recovering addicts, not just recovering alcoholics, maintain their blood sugar levels in order to prevent, or minimize, cravings. Healthy sugars can be found in fruits and healthy starches like sweet potatoes and grains.

Another key factor to note is that it is important for people in recovery to balance all nutrients. Maintaining healthy levels of fats, proteins and carbohydrates can also minimize cravings. Healthy sources for these can be avocadoes, nuts, and grains. Aside from minimizing cravings, flooding your body with nutrients will be beneficial to the brain as well. When your brain lacks key nutrients, you will feel tired, irritable and this can also lead to relapse.
