Addiction and Depression Often Go Hand in Hand

Addiction Warning Signs for an Adult Child of an Alcoholic - The Bergand Group

We see so many people in the public eye struggling with addiction and depression – most recently Robin Williams lost his battle with the duo. What we don’t take enough time to look at is the consistency addiction and depression are experienced together. David Sack, M.D. writes, “Because my work involves helping those with addiction and depression, I’m often turned to for explanations in the wake of tragedies such as these. There are no easy answers, but there are things it helps to understand about the nature of addiction and depression, especially for those fighting the same battles.” What if we took a step back from pointing fingers at addicts and realized that there’s more than what meets the eye?

Addiction and Depression

Those suffering from depression often seek outside influences to make their feelings of malaise and sadness lessen. Whether this outside influence exists as a healthy habit, like seeking refuge from depression by turning to exercise or a healthy habit like knitting, or a serious compulsion, like drinking or using drugs, depressed individuals need comfort from some source. While drugs and alcohol act as a refuge from unhealthy feelings it doesn’t last long. Soon after they wear off the user is left feeling depressed, yet again. “Addiction and depression are tough enough to deal with alone. Together their negative effects multiply. For example, those with depression have about a 10 percent lifetime suicide risk; those with a substance use disorder have about the same. When combined, the suicide risk skyrockets to about 1 in 4.”
Not only does depression lead to the start of an addiction, it can lead to relapse as well. Addiction and depression are a vicious cycle. “Depression also acts as a relapse trigger. In fact, studies have found that it’s the single biggest predictor of alcohol relapse.” When suffering from the cycle of addiction and depression, it is dire that the individual seeks counseling.

Treatment for Addiction and Depression

Since addiction and depression prove to go hand in hand, those suffering benefit from regular, long-term treatment. Treatment for addiction and depression is successful when the patient seeks care and wellness in all aspects of their lives. Combined with mindful practices such as meditation, exercise and healthy-eating, treatment for addiction and depression includes detox, counseling and psychotherapy, group therapy, and relapse prevention programs.

If you, or someone you know, is suffering from the unfortunate cycle of addiction and depression, The Bergand Group can help. We are Baltimore’s leading addiction treatment partners and offer treatment for every step of your recovery process.
