Moving on From Addiction

Red Ribbon Week: Preventing Drug Abuse - The Bergand Group

Moving on from addiction is a confusing experience. It is very easy to get “stuck” in thought and emotion. Regrets and shame from the past arise and they can be uncomfortable to process. There are some important things to remember when moving on from addiction.

Moving on From Addiction

  • Let Go of the Past. In order to move forward, one must not forget to let go of the past. Moving on from addiction requires a fresh outlook on life and ensuring that your thoughts don’t get obstructed by past regrets. Think about the future – assess your life as it is right now and see how you can flourish in your new-found sobriety.
  • Open Up. Opening up requires vulnerability. When moving on from addiction, it is hard to open up. When you’ve gone through experiences that were unpleasant, the body’s first response is to shut down. Opening up allows for positive experiences to take place, reassuring you that moving on from addiction is the right path.
  • Purge Your Life. Get rid of unwanted things, whether this includes people, places or things, in order to move forward. Anchoring yourself in the past prevents you from living in the present. Moving on from addiction includes reassessing your needs and getting rid of unwanted emotions, habits, and relationships.
  • Forgive. Forgive yourself and others. While you don’t need to be friends with those who have wronged you during your addiction, it is important to forgive in order to heal. Forgiving is another way of letting go.
  • Repair What Serves You. If you know there are things that you’ve done to wrong people, apologize. Sobriety gives you the chance to start fresh – with yourself and others. Repair those relationships that are healthy and positive. This includes repairing your relationship with yourself, ensure that you treat yourself with respect from here on out.
  • Rewrite Your Narrative – In the Present. We are the story that we tell ourselves. If we see ourselves as weak and struggling individuals, we will have a hard time being strong and steady. Rewriting your narrative gives you power over your life and sobriety. Moving on from addiction allows you to start anew.

Moving on from addiction is a wonderful and scary time. During this time, recovering addicts benefit from counseling – in group or individual settings. Surround yourself with healthy, non-using individuals, especially those who understand your sobriety. Moving on from addiction doesn’t have to be a struggle, especially when you rely on the addiction specialists at The Bergand Group.
