Teen Drug Use Indicated by Certain Signs

Teen Drug Use - The Bergand Group

If you’re the parent of a young person, particularly a pre-teen or teenager, then you may wonder whether or not your child has ever had contact with drugs, or if they are even regularly using any drugs. Teen drug use can lead to an addiction, particularly the earlier he or she is exposed to those substances, so look for some signs that may indicate as such.

The Signals That May Suggest Teen Drug Use

“Young adults deal with many physical and emotional changes throughout their teen years, making it difficult to pinpoint whether their symptoms are drug related, or simply puberty.” Of course, it’s better to think seriously about whether it could be the former rather than simply chalking it up to emotional growing pains.

Some symptoms that may point to teen drug use include changes in behavior, emotions, health, and/or hygiene. Are they acting unfriendly toward those they previous got along with? Do they seem particularly moody or rebellious, more so than ever before? This situation is always made more complicated by the possibility of issues of mental health, so there’s another consideration for the scrutinizing parent.

Other places to look for warning signs are school and around the house. If their grades are dropping below their average, if they’re spending more time locked in their room or away from home than usual, then these may be indicative of drug-related habits. “Teenage behavior can be unpredictable and vague but there are external factors that can influence them negatively and drive them towards drug use.” Though that unpredictability is not necessarily due to drug use, it’s certainly possible, and shouldn’t be overlooked.
