College Drinking Can Be a Slippery Slope Toward Substance Abuse

College Drinking and Substance Abuse - The Bergand Group

While colleges and universities provide immeasurable opportunities, those opportunities are not always positive. Beyond education, students find peer pressure and the temptation of dangerous experiences, along with issues of mental illness and substance abuse. Unfortunately, those last two items don’t play well, and this college drinking puts many young people at risk.

Stress and High Expectations Encourage College Drinking, Substance Abuse

Though not all campuses are created equal, many of them are the haunting grounds of people in the late teens and early 20s who are still trying to find their way in the world. “Work hard, play hard” is a common theme among students of this age who have to apply themselves more than ever before in order to come out not only with good grades, but a job or internship. As a result, they “let off steam” with excessive alcohol or drug use.
Though many people are able to make it through to the other side of graduation without issue, some graduates leave college unfit for the adult world, still retaining college drinking habits or the lifestyle at large. Even if they obtained a job or internship, they may not be able to adapt to a more mature, less party-focused lifestyle so soon after they were deeply engrossed in it. These maladapted young people may also be “wrestling with significant mental health issues” which would, of course, complicate things even more.
Where does this leave nervous parents? Talk to your child or children about college drinking and substance abuse. Make sure that they know their resources when dealing with stress or feelings of being completely overwhelmed. If they can turn to you – or a guidance counselor, or a trusted friend – then they may not start down a risky road.
