Recovering alcoholic and author of Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Drinking, Ann Dowsett Johnston, shares her journey with viewers in this poignant TEDx video. With the publication of her book Johnston “outed” herself as an alcoholic, but in doing so she created a dialogue about the alcohol industry and its marketing efforts towards women.
Johnston also reflects on her childhood and discusses her mother’s battle with drinking and taking Valium. She describes her mother as “The poster girl for her era – the 1960’s. Mixing cocktails during the day, a stay-at-home mom who really devolved over three decades.” She was convinced that seeing her mother’s downfall would be devastating enough to prevent her from drinking – but she was wrong. Realizing that alcoholism didn’t discriminate due to age, race or gender, Johnston found herself in her 50’s with a drinking problem.
