Tips for Healing the Brain After Alcohol and Drug Addiction

Talking to Your Children About Drugs - The Bergand Group

It was once believed that damage to the brain from alcohol and drug addiction use was irreversible, but now studies show that the brain is more resilient than we thought. While it might take more regular users longer to get out of the “brain fog,” it is said that the brain begins healing once drug and alcohol use stops.

It is important to note that detox programs guide a user through the withdrawal period and this leads to a more successful recovery. At The Bergand Group, we offer Outpatient Detox/Withdraw Symptom Management, a service that assists those who experience withdrawal symptoms when they are not using. Along with Outpatient Detox/Withdraw Symptom Management and Counseling sessions, there are some things patients can do on their own to heal and help prevent relapse.

    • Exercise helps by promoting overall health and by boosting blood flow to your brain, which leads to better moods and can lessen depression.

    • Rest gives the brain time to heal. Getting adequate rest will be beneficial in lessening the “brain fog” many patients experience during recovery.

    • Eat Well. Eat well and incorporate fats, proteins, and omega fatty acids, into your diet.

    • Find support. Look for a supportive group of people during your recovery. The frustrations of feeling misunderstood will lessen when you are around people who are empathetic to you.

  • Work your mind. Socialize, read, do puzzles, and write as often as possible during the recovery period. Working your mind will help it get back to it’s pre-drug state.
