Prevent Teen Addiction with Parental Guidance

Prevent Teen Addiction - The Bergand Group

With addiction affecting all ages in America, parents have to be vigilant about their children, particularly if those children are in their adolescent years. It isn’t always possible to keep them from certain “physical and mental health conditions including depression and addiction,” but the chance that they will suffer from those afflictions will be much higher without anyone to support and guide them. The best way to prevent teen addiction is to be there for them, to listen to them, and to offer support wherever you can.

How You Can Prevent Teen Addiction with Support

Children, particularly in their teenage years, are prone to various forms of rebellion and aversion to parents. Still, it should be a priority of those parents to be there for their son or daughter to try and prevent the development of an addiction. Too many young people in high school and college are suffering from mental illness and drug and alcohol abuse, so try and employ some of these practices to do everything you can to prevent teen addiction.

“One of the most effective ways you can help prevent the onset of depression or substance use disorders in your child is by recognizing and tapping into the activities that make them the happiest.” That is, give value to their hobbies, skills, and other healthy activities. If they play a sport, offer to practice or play with them. If they enjoy art, take a trip to an art store or gallery to encourage the craft. If they are a musician, ask about their likes and dislikes within genres. Whatever the activities, these are the backbones of solid development for adolescents and should be cultivated to keep them safe and out of trouble.

Even if it can be difficult or awkward at times, make sure that your child knows that he or she can talk to you anytime about anything. Even if you or they are uncomfortable, this practice can provide them with an adviser, with someone to ask about dilemmas that may otherwise lead to drugs or alcohol. For example, if they are having great stress at school, it may lead to the abuse of “study drugs.” However, if they speak to you about it, you can reassure them of their worth and develop a strategy to reduce stress. Affirming their value as a human being and budding adult is crucial to prevent teen addiction as it is often this esteem that keeps them from slipping into substance use.

Something that can happen within the parent-child relationship is that parents can (accidentally) make their children think that they don’t take the teens seriously. Their words, actions, and even tone suggest that the child is just that – a child – and that they aren’t mature enough for certain things. This can lead to defiance and, in some cases, to using drugs or alcohol. However, if you can “validate your child’s feelings as real and meaningful” and really express your desire to understand them, they’re much less likely to turn away in such a detrimental fashion.

Finally, if they have already gotten mixed up with substance abuse and have come to you for help, then aid them in finding that help. Work with them to seek out the right treatment plan, center, or counselor for them. Even if they just need to speak with someone about their experiences, your assistance will make the process infinitely easier for him or her. Take their desires and opinions into account and then see what kinds of offerings you find that your kid is amenable to.

It might surprise you to see how big of an impact you have on their involvement (or lack thereof) with drugs and alcohol, but it’s true. Be open and honest with your son or daughter and encourage him or her to do the same. If an issue arises that requires professional help, then get in touch with The Bergand Group.
