Sober Activities for Summer

Sober Activities for Summer - The Bergand Group

We’re about two-thirds through summer, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to dwindle. Many times when people get sober they worry about what activities and events they will feel comfortable attending. While it may be hard to go to a barbeque that has a heavy focus on alcohol, there are still many sober activities that are fun and enjoyable for summer.

6 Sober Activities

  1. Join a volunteer group. Maybe you’ve always wanted to become a Big Brother or Big Sister, or maybe you’re interested in helping out at a community garden. Do this activity solo, or enlist a friend or family member to come along.
  2. Connect with people who understand your struggle. This can mean attending a group therapy session, or joining a sober book club. Opening up and creating an honest dialogue surrounding addiction will help break the stigma.
  3. Learn a new skill by attending a workshop or finding a friend who can teach help. Spending your time on positive, skill-building activities is a mood booster.
  4. Find a local museum that you’ve never been to. Summer is a great time to visit a museum, you can beat the heat and learn something new.
  5. Check out local parks and hiking trails. Getting outside not only boosts your mood, but unplugging from technology can also do wonders for your mental health.
  6. Try a new type of exercise. Many times there are fitness classes at local community centers or places of worship. Trying something new will give you a confidence boost and will also help you meet new people who enjoy keeping mentally fit.

Finding a community of like-minded individuals will help you get through summer and stay clean. Planning sober activities with friends or family is a great way to enjoy the summer. Regularly attending ongoing treatment for your addiction will also help prevent relapse. This can include individual or group therapy, a relapse prevention course, or IOPs.
