4 Tips For Relapse Prevention

4 Tips For Relapse Prevention - The Bergand Group

Relapse prevention is a plan put into action by a recovering addict and his or her addiction treatment physician. Whether this plan includes a relapse prevention course, group therapy, or simply individual therapy, a recovering addict must make a plan for continuing sobriety if they want their chances for relapse to lessen. Relapse, or the return to heavy alcohol or drug use following a period of abstinence, unfortunately may occur in some recovering addicts who have completed a treatment program. A relapse prevention course and plan of action prepares those in recovery with the insight and education into the risks and causes of relapse.

Relapse Prevention Tips

  • Join a relapse prevention program. Relapse prevention programs are designed to educate those who are maintaining sobriety about the risks and causes of relapse. In a relapse prevention course recovering addicts can understand, and become familiar with, their triggers and become aware of how to use the skills they’ve learned in high-risk situations.
  • Become involved in a group therapy. Group therapy is useful for those in recovery because it gives members a chance to be a sounding board for each other in regards to how they deal with staying sober. When people realize that they are not alone, they often feel relief and, in turn, are more willing to open up about what they are experiencing.
  • Discover healthy lifestyle alternatives. When someone is used to using often, they find that they have a hard time finding activities that do not include drugs or alcohol. Sobriety gives people a chance to look at what they really enjoy doing and who they enjoy spending their time with. Finding a new hobby, such as an intramural sport or taking music lessons, can help a recovering addict stay sober.
  • Volunteer and give back with your time. Sometimes recovering addicts find they have more time on their hands now that they are not using. If this is the case, volunteering in the community helps give them a sense of pride. Helping others, whether that means volunteering at a senior center or an animal shelter, ensures that their time is filled with meaningful activities.

Relapse prevention is an ongoing practice. Once sobriety is achieved, it is important to practice relapse prevention techniques in order to maintain sobriety and avoid relapse. Together, with a addiction treatment physician, recovering addicts can come up with a plan to prevent relapse.
