In recent years, visits to the emergency room as a result of a drug overdose have increased significantly. The Drug Abuse Warning Network issue a report annually on the number of emergency room visits that are drug related in the United States. Following are some statistics from the report released in 2011.
Drug Related Emergency Room Visits
- In 2011, there were 2,462,948 emergency room visits related to drug misuse or abuse. This is equal to 6,747 visits per day.
- Visits related to the abuse or misuse of pharmaceuticals was the largest single category, with 835,275 visits. This is a 148% increase since 2004.
- Visits as a result of combinations of either illicit drugs with alcohol, illicit drugs with pharmaceuticals, alcohol with pharmaceuticals, or illicit drugs with alcohol and pharmaceuticals totaled 853,995.
- In 2004, the number of drug related emergency room visits was 1,619,056, and this number increased every year from 2004 to 2011 except for in 2005. Altogether drug related emergency room visits saw a 52% increase from 2004-2011.
