Drug Help and Self-Support

Drug Help from an Addiction Recovery Center - The Bergand Group

Getting effective drug help can seem impossible. There are dozens of clinics for in-person aid and countless resources online to be sorted through and tested. A single person can’t easily see all of the options and then discern which addiction recovery center will work the best for him or her. If you or someone you care about needs help working through issues of substance abuse, then begin the exploration with a baseline understanding of the anatomy of addiction itself.

Seek out Drug Help in the Right Places

With so much misinformation surrounding addiction, navigating the myths to find solid drug help in your life is harder than ever. Thankfully, there are a lot of people who are committed to both the facts and to promoting effective recovery.

The first consideration is whether or not you or your loved one have a mental illness that may be complicating matters. If so, a “dual diagnosis” program from a qualified addiction recovery center would be one of the most helpful options. Though it can be tricky determining “which comes first… for treatment to be effective, it’s important to tackle both conditions at the same time.” Mental illness and drug help are combined in this case, a treatment plan more tailored to the needs of someone with a co-occurring disorder.

Another consideration is whether or not you (or they) are willing to utilize medication to aid in drug help. This is a conversation that would obviously need to involve a doctor or psychiatrist in order to receive a prescription, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do some research of your own in order to see what has worked for others in similar positions in the past. You may even be able to speak with people whose opinions you value if you know of any friends or family members who have worked through addiction and who would be comfortable having a conversation about it. If they have any recommendations of an addiction recovery center that worked well for them, then it should be a consideration.

More productive drug help comes with a more well-rounded sense of understanding. In this case, an understanding of the reality of relapse. “Relapse is part of the definition of addiction, because addiction can’t be cured, although it can be treated and managed.” Addiction doesn’t just vanish with a quick fix, so there’s always the danger of using again. We’ve discussed ways in which you can help to prevent relapse, but a big piece of that is to acknowledge the existence of its threat.

Give yourself credit for the progress you’ve made thus far. If all you’ve done is realize that you need some help, however serious, then that is enough to be recognized. Often times admission of a problem and taking the first steps toward recovery are the hardest, and real drug help won’t come without difficulty. You may be too critical of yourself which can prevent true rehabilitation, so turn that criticism into positive motivation for change. If you take things one day at a time and think positively of your own efforts, then the experience will be slightly less trying.
