Be the Difference to Someone in a Detox Program

Help for Addiction - the Bergand Group

Watching someone you care about work their way through a detox program can be difficult for everyone involved as the person meets all the roadblocks to recovery.  You may think that there’s little you can do, or feel as if you’re helpless in the face of their struggle without a real understanding of how best to aid and support them.  However, this is far from the truth; there are a number of ways that you can assist someone in a detox program, and it begins with patience, compassion, and an open mind.

Tips to Help You Help Them

While they are in early recovery, in the beginning of their experience within a detox program, there is a lot you can do to help.  To begin, make the effort to learn about their experience from a “clinical” perspective, looking into the physical symptoms of what they’re going through, the way it affects their mind and body, the experiences of others who have overcome addiction.  If you have a more solid understanding of what the person will face as they move through the detox program and how they may be different once they’re clean, you can offer a greater breadth of aid.  After all, it’s much more difficult to help someone if you have no idea what they’re dealing with.

“Understand that rehab is not a cure, but only part of the process of becoming sober” and keep an open mind to respect their efforts.  Not everyone has a smooth recovery or necessarily succeeds within their detox program on the first try, so don’t develop unrealistic expectations that may fluster or discourage the patient.  There is a lot more to recovery than meets the eye, most of which the individual will be unable or unwilling to explain, so try to approach the entire process one step at a time and with a supportive understanding.

The entire process is a big change in the life of the patient, so keep in mind that the changes will keep coming.  Encourage shifts from their previous lifestyle, such as finding new hangouts and weekend activities that are fun, but do not involve old haunts (such as bars and parties).  It’s important to keep their schedule full to ensure that the mind is busy and not drifting back to the comforts that used to fill time in their lives.  If there were other hobbies or activities that the patient enjoyed that were replaced with drugs or alcohol before the detox program, then try and reinstate those ventures.  It can also be an ideal time to bring new distractions that perhaps you and your loved one can enjoy together.

On a similar note, try to keep those who might still imbibe away from the person in recovery.  It’s hard enough to work through a detox program under the best circumstances, but to do so while others are nearby and exhibiting old, dangerous behaviors can be hugely detrimental.  Surrounding the individual with a supportive network of people with healthy lifestyles and positive attitudes who can support him or her after the detox program experience can make an enormous difference.  Some connections may have been left behind during the substance abuse period, but it’s never too late to try again by reaching out with a phone call or quick message.  At the very least, you can be the one to be there for him or her, particularly when things are at their most challenging.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that there will be ups and downs within the process and that things rarely go smoothly, even with a solid support system and positive lifestyle.  Still, it could be the difference between ultimate success and failure if even one person is committed to the benefit of the person working within a detox program, so be that person in all the ways that you can.
