Recovery from Addiction Takes Time

Success in Recovery From Addiction Takes Time - The Bergand Group

What are the “essential” pieces of recovery from addiction? Each individual experience is unique and different treatment offerings work better or worse depending on the person, but there are some constants. Those who work within addiction treatment and who research the science behind it have been able to identify some of the “tools” toward success in recovery and the factors which can prevent an easier road to this end.

Changes Involved with Recovery from Addiction

“You recover by creating a new life where it is easier to not use.” It may  sound idealistic, but thinking about rehabilitation in this way can instill in the patient a positive state of mind with which to begin their journey. After all, keeping too many aspects of their “old life” will only create more threats to recovery: stumbling blocks that could lead to instances of relapse. Not everything has to change, of course, but some habits absolutely need to be removed or at least adjusted to give yourself the best chance possible to reach success in recovery.

While working within treatment, what do you think are some of the situations you may find yourself in where you are most at risk for relapsing? If you are “hungry, angry, lonely, or tired,” as a few examples, you will be less-equipped to steel yourself against cravings that may arise. Without meeting your simplest, base needs, your body and mind will be less able to defend against these invasive and potentially-dangerous triggers. Another potentially problematic situation is the time of day; “your strongest cravings usually occur at the end of the day,” so keep this in mind if you are trying to craft a strategy of preventing instances of relapse.

It’s unrealistic to think that you can always be prepared for, or always avoid, situations where you might face cravings, but you can at least develop strategies to utilize at the drop of a hat to give yourself a better chance for success in recovery. For example, better self-care will make you generally more able to stand against cravings and triggers during your recovery from addiction even if those cravings and triggers take you by surprise. Imagine trying to resist the lure of going into a bar when you’re exhausted or frustrated versus well-rested and content; which situation do you think would be easier?

You won’t just wake up one day and be sober; it takes day after day of these changes in all parts of your life to really stand up to an addiction. “Recovery isn’t about one big change. It’s about lots of little changes.” Developing healthy, relaxing, and focused habits will help you along the path to a more productive and safe lifestyle, one without the influence and danger of substance use. The reason that a lot of addictions begin is that people are looking for more effective ways to relieve the tension and stress in their lives, so find one that works for you to replace drugs and alcohol.

Success in recovery from addiction calls for honesty to yourself, to your loved ones, and to the professionals who are working to help you. This is a chance for you to turn things around, to improve your situation at large, and it calls for your best efforts. The best way to reach the goals you set for yourself is to become informed about the challenges you may face while you’re recovering; to learn more about this, get in touch with The Bergand Group.
