Addiction Recovery Needs National Attention

Addiction Recovery - The Bergand Group

America’s addiction problem is often relegated to being the elephant in the room within our country’s conversation. Despite the enormous number of people who suffer from substance abuse, these statistics only come into the limelight every so often, with addiction recovery efforts being few and far between. This needs to change!

Improving upon Our Nation’s Addiction Recovery Efforts

“2016 drug overdoses reached over 63,000… not to mention approximately another 100,000 Americans who die each year from alcohol addiction and related illnesses.” Why is there not more discussion about these numbers? There is a serious lack of allocation of resources in this arena with the nation’s attention flitting from issue to issue, depending on what politicians are harping on that day. Though some presidents have spoken up about addiction in America in the recent past, and though they have vowed to work to combat it, there still has not been significant change.

It has been called an emergency of public health, and yet substance abuse is not a priority. In order to make any serious progress along this front, there are a number of routes that could, and should, be followed. “One pathway still in need of development is pharmacology, or medications for substance use disorder.” Medication management involving Suboxone and Narcan plays a big role in the procedures of  many addiction recovery centers, but there has to be more that’s done. Guidelines for clinical centers and treatment has to be updated to dictate the exact treatment of opioid abuse, the largest of the addictions that plagues our nation.

Part of the issue is that we work to “help” those who are in immediate danger – to get the seriously addicted into treatment – but don’t do enough to help them to continue along that path. “We know that initially stopping substance use is actually the easier part; staying stopped is the critical challenge.” Of course, this requires a larger commitment of time, money, and other resources, and America at large has a short attention span. The subject of addiction is used as a political platform for many, but only briefly, until they’ve moved on to the next issue. Those in power have to stay focused on this so that we can truly aid those in need.

In short, short and long-term treatment options have to  be combined in all cases to ensure smoother addiction recovery. Yes, this means a larger investment from everyone involved, but this is likely to be the only way that we can truly aid those who need it within the country. “Individuals need resources that support remission and help individuals start to gain traction and reconstruct their lives,” but we haven’t been doing a particularly good job of providing those resources with any kind of regularity. Treatment centers do everything they can, but are often overwhelmed with the number of cases and need support from the city, state, and country as a whole.
