Psychoeducational Program Benefits Explained

Psychoeducational Program - The Bergand Group

A psychoeducational program, by name, seems fairly self-explanatory. Simple, even, in concept. These programs are meant to educate those involved about the particulars of one mental illness or disorder or another and even about the nature of addiction itself. The Bergand Group offers such programs to aid those who are struggling, so read more about them to discern whether they might be the right fit for you.

What You Gain from a Psychoeducational Program

The best ‘course’ is taught by those who have the experiences needed to add depth to a class. That’s why we only hire the best, nationally-known educators who can offer our patients a comprehensive and well-rounded experience. The faculty members, who are well-versed in a variety of related subjects, can offer the solid foundation needed to begin an experience in a psychoeducational program.

“Psychoeducation was originally conceived as a composite of numerous therapeutic elements within a complex family therapy intervention.” Though family members may still be involved, depending on the specific case, the range of areas that this type of treatment encompasses has certainly increased in size. As a treatment these educational sessions are meant to provide “a fundamental understanding” so that patients can comprehend what they are facing, accept their circumstances, and move forward based on those truths.

Research has shown that the benefits of these programs includes “a higher level of compliance, lower rate of relapse, and improved psychopathological status.” This is crucial, considering how many cases of addiction are also coupled with instances of mental illness. A psychoeducational program may well be used within a dual diagnosis program to try and keep the patient informed from the start about what they are dealing with.

Like most educational programs, this one isn’t only meant to increase knowledge and awareness, but to “boost empowerment” for patients and loved ones. If they are told, if they are shown in facts and proof, that there is a plan for them that can successful lead them to sobriety and recovery, then they’re more likely to have confidence in themselves and in the process than they might have had otherwise. To reach their true potential within any kind of rehabilitation, the individual must accept the hard truths, positive and negative, and they can then move forward with this basis of understanding.

Unfortunately, a roadblock for a psychoeducational program finding the success that the patient desires is the “lack of sufficient information and resources” which seems to be a constant problem in the field. Even in the modern era, not nearly enough time, money, and attention are given to such programs, whether for mental health, addiction, or both. These things are all needed to put more research and study toward how best to shape and improve these programs so that they can be of most use to patients and their families.

The aim of this training is, again, to empower. To educate. To give the best chance available to those who have been struggling with substance abuse and mental disorders. As with many things, increased education makes for an increase in success. If the patient is able to more fully grasp what they have been through and why, and where they are headed without the commitment to change, then they will be much more able to work through the trials of mental illness and/or substance use disorders.
