Outpatient Treatment Offers Patients Flexibility

Inpatient and Outpatient Treatment - The Bergand Group

If you choose to enter into treatment for addiction, or if you are aiding someone in finding an option that works for them, then there are two general options: inpatient and outpatient treatment. Both have the goal of becoming independent of substances, but they do so with different approaches. Inpatient treatment involves the person actually living on site for as long as the program lasts while outpatient treatment involves the individual attending sessions at the facility, but then returning home. Each of these offerings are able to aid someone in need of addiction treatment and therapy, but both may not be right for everyone.

What Benefits Are Offered by Outpatient Treatment?

When trying to decide between inpatient and outpatient treatment, consider your job, education, and other similar factors. Most people can’t be away from those things for months at a time, which is why outpatient treatment would be the better choice. Too many people outside of the addiction world believe that patients have nothing else in their lives that they would need to attend to, but this is, of course, a stereotype. Functioning patients almost always have such obligations that they need to take care of while also getting treatment. Again, this is where an outpatient setting, which allows them to engage with other facets of their lives, would be an ideal choice.

Outpatient treatment can provide the balance of a patient’s life that they weren’t able to establish on their own. He or she is able to work through treatment with the aid of a professional or treatment center, but he or she can also continue working, going to school, attending to family matters, and other parts of his or her life without dropping them entirely. This kind of treatment typically has a more flexible schedule so that patients can have both freedom and structure at the same time.

Another option for those who are struggling with substance abuse is intensive outpatient rehabilitation. Because it is “intensive,” it can help with more difficult cases by offering regular or more frequent treatment for those who need extra aid.

Finally, outpatient treatment provides a level of support that the individual likely needs and may not have otherwise. That is, while they will have the aid of the staff in both kinds of treatment, returning home at the end of the day keeps them more in touch with family and friends. This can offer them a solid sense of normalcy and comfort in a turbulent time, something that many people desperately need while so much else of their life during this period is unpredictable. If you know someone who has entered into any kind of treatment for addiction, make sure to be there for them as much as you can to aid the process of recovery.
