We’re well beyond the point of realizing that the United States as a whole is struggling with opioids. This addiction epidemic has been going on for years now, growing in strength and number, seemingly unchecked, as time goes on.
The Growing Tragedy of the Opioids Addiction Epidemic
“From 2001 to 2016, the number of opioid-related deaths rose from 9,489 to 42,245—representing a 345 percent increase.” This is absolutely unacceptable, yet it continues despite the increasing public outrage. No one could deny the enormity of this crisis, but many people have their attention turned elsewhere, to our country’s other issues, rather than coming together to combat this one.
In this day and age, people should be living longer than ever, living healthier lives than in the past. Unfortunately, this hasn’t been the reality, not with opioid-related deaths on the rise. “By 2016, one out of every five deaths among people aged 24–35 was due to opioids.” High numbers of use are also associated with older people who became addicted following a surgery or in pursuit of general pain management. Clearly, this addiction epidemic is not limited to one generation or situation and can ruin the lives of a diverse group.
All of this isn’t helped by the also-rising numbers of those affected by mental health disorders. Though these two afflictions aren’t necessarily related, it’s an unfortunate reality that both have been on the rise, since it’s even more difficult to treat any kind of addiction when issues of mental health are factoring in to the situation.
