Opioid Prescriptions: The Reality of the Numbers

Opioid Prescriptions - The Bergand Group

Since the Surgeon General pleaded with doctors across America to reduce opioid prescriptions, much more attention has fallen to the epidemic in general. This is good, of course, as it prompts people to think more seriously about how we can reduce this serious issue. Still, though “there has been a slight reduction in deaths from physician-prescribed opioids, 40 percent of fatal overdoses still involve them.”

Why Doctors Still Give out Opioid Prescriptions

Opioids are responsible for so many overdose deaths because they are the gateway to heroin and fentanyl, both of which are dangerous and which can be obtained more easily than prescription pills. Though many doctors are working hard to prevent their patients from becoming addicted to painkillers (and beyond), some are still allowing for more access than is advised.

We still want to know why certain doctors were more inclined to prescribe more opioids (whether because of drug company incentives, or other reasons), but that should be less important now than the need to find relief for those already afflicted. Reducing opioid prescriptions is necessary, but there are so many people who are already addicted and who need professional aid.

The signs of opiate addiction are not always immediately obvious to an observer. When an addict is in withdrawal from an opiate, the symptoms are similar to those of withdrawal from other drugs: anxiety, nausea, sweating, insomnia, aches and pains, and agitation. During opiate detox, the first stage of an opiate addiction treatment program, these symptoms can be extremely uncomfortable but are not life-threatening, so it is vital that a detox program is overseen by medical professionals from a drug rehabilitation facility. To combat the pain that comes with opiate withdrawal, some rehabilitation programs utilize replacement medications, such as Suboxone, to treat pain in a safe, controlled manner.
