Opioid Epidemic Status in Late 2018

Opioid Epidemic - The Bergand Group

It’s more than clear that the opioid epidemic is just that – an epidemic – but what does that mean in a practical sense? “On average, 115 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose.” This is a real number, and one that should be terrifying.

How to Start Bouncing Back from the Opioid Epidemic

This terrible wave of addiction is at its worst. No matter how the individual first comes into contact with these substances, the abuse grows out of a chemical necessity and ruins the lives that it touches. Though the patient feels good initially (as a result of the endorphins produced), the bad vastly outweighs the good. “Taking opioids over time causes the body to produce fewer of its own endorphins. As a result, the brain requires the drug to produce good feelings.” So, even those who initially chase (seemingly) positive feelings find that those are in less and less supply.

Those who turn to these pills for reasons of pain management need better, and safer, solutions, and those who are already in the throes of an addiction need help to break contact with these drugs now. Stringent regulations are needed with respect to prescribers, but there also needs to be a greater effort toward education, particularly when it comes to the dangers of these drugs. If there is absolutely a need for a patient to be given these pills, then there must be follow-up appointments wherein the doctor can monitor progress and regulate the dosage.

There is a lot that can and should be done in order to try and stop these drugs from ruining any more lives. To learn more about the current state of the opioid epidemic, contact The Bergand Group.
