Drug abuse and addiction has held the United States in its grip for many decades. However, in recent years, opioids have taken over the nation’s headlines as the biggest offender. In their wake are devastation and death, and Maryland has certainly suffered from the effects of the opioid crisis.

For Those Affect by the Opioid Crisis in Maryland and Beyond

During the first half of 2018, the Maryland Department of Health recorded 1,185 opioid-related deaths in the state. This staggering mid-year figure is 15% higher than the first half of 2017. There were 2,009 fatalities for that year, the highest ever for the state of Maryland. This high number of deaths places the state among those hit hardest by the opioid crisis, and the specific city hit hardest by the opioid crisis is Baltimore. Its 483 overdose deaths by July 1st overshadows the city’s 300-plus homicides during the same period, many of which have tie-ins to the increasing illegal fentanyl trade.

The state has enacted measures to attempt to reign in Maryland’s expanding opioid crisis. Originally brought on by the over-prescribing of drugs like Oxycontin, the state has put programs in place to monitor prescription writing and make the overdose-reversing drug Naloxone available. While these measures did show a decrease in the number of deaths from pills and heroin, the synthetic opioid, fentanyl, halted progress. Fentanyl alone is responsible for 88% of the deaths in 2017.

These statistics are more than merely numbers. Each figure represents a person who needed help. The statistics represent people who left behind loved ones who continue to mourn their loss. Not only do they grieve, they also blame themselves for what happened. They are left behind to constantly try to relive the events in their minds, trying to find an answer.
