“‘Fentanyl is one of the most dangerous drugs there is,’ said Senator Tom Cotton in a press conference. ‘It killed more than 20,000 Americans last year and has been a driving force behind the opioid crisis in the United States.'” Obviously, then, action needs to be taken to curb these deaths and to determine how to eliminate this and other substances as risks to our nation.
The Many Factors Behind the Opioid Crisis
As with so much of the opioid crisis, it’s nearly impossible to pin down a single “culprit” at which we can point our fingers. Yes, fentanyl is dangerous, and it’s certainly contributed in a negative way to the state of addiction in the county, but it’s far from the only contributor.
“The combined action of multiple drugs have different, potentially deadly, actions.” In many cases, it’s the combination of different drugs, or drugs and alcohol, that causes fatal problems for people. In addition, there are many cases of people intending to purchase one drug and ending up with another – something “impure” – of questionable contents. Not knowing what they’re putting into their systems is another huge risk run by those who are obtaining drugs from unknown sources.
The majority of overdoses reveal that, if fentanyl was in the individual’s system at all, it was in combination with a handful of other substances. The opioid crisis is so devastating because it is impossible to identify just one problem area or type of drug, and its victims are exemplary of this.
