The ’causes’ of the opioid addiction are greatly variable, but something that has been theorized is that a lack of purpose and drive is a contributor to the opioids epidemic of the modern age. People who are unable to see a clear direction within their own futures are often vulnerable to this extent of drug use.

A Lack of Goals Can Lead to Opioid Epidemic Involvement

“With a strong sense of purpose, we become very resilient, able to overcome challenges, and to bounce back after setbacks.” These ‘setbacks’ can be past or present traumas, and no matter how dire the situation, a person with strong drive can overcome. However, those who are a bit more lost along the way are more susceptible to the kinds of things that lead to an opioid addiction, or other issues of substance abuse.

Whether it’s increased drinking to stave off boredom or increasing substance use to forget about childhood trauma, a lack of purpose can steer a person toward these dangers. Opioid addiction often begins as a result of the abuse of painkillers, but satisfying that addiction can then fill that void and act as a motivation. Once you have a driving force like that, it can be difficult to shake, which is why it’s so important to develop strong motivations and goals throughout one’s life.

It’s never “too late” for this, of course. Even if a person is suffering within the opioid epidemic that has the country in its grasp, there’s always hope. Many recovery programs help you to form drives and a sense of purpose, both which will help you to move forward more easily.
