Opioids Crisis Misinformation Still Rampant

Opioids Crisis - The Bergand Group

There is no single “solution” to the opioids crisis that plagues our country right now, that much is clear. There are, however, a number of steps that we as a population can take to begin moving in the right direction, toward breaking from these addictions and helping those affected to reach recovery.

The Road to Recovering from the Opioids Crisis

Something that is unpleasant, but which can’t go unsaid, is the information surrounding opioid and other addiction statistics. Nobody wants to hear about the number of lives that have been negatively affected, or ended, by these drugs, but ignoring the facts is a disservice to those who have suffered. It also makes it easier for those who are abusing those same drugs to continue their habits without guilt or fear. The truth, as some experts see it, is that fear is necessary, as long as it accompanies the truth of this scary situation.

“Those most at risk are mixing a variety of substances” and don’t often seem to realize it. Many people who are addicted to heroin believe that they have the purest form of the product and are woefully misinformed. If the truth of the matter, that users often are ingesting a dangerous combination of different substances, were more widespread, then a number of instances of overdose could be avoided.

Another important fact to remember is that addiction can stem from a number of dangerous or unhealthy behaviors and/or substances: not just from one type of drug, not just from alcohol, etc. A person could have the warning signs of someone prone to addictive or obsessive behaviors, signs that, if noticed, could be taken advantage of early to curb more dangerous habits before they begin. Similarly, a person who has completed rehab and recovery may be tempted by other practices that have the lull of an addiction, like gambling, but with increased awareness, they can more easily avoid such pitfalls.

The opioids crisis and related addictions have developed so completely as epidemics in part due to our cultural stigmas. Legal and societal bans on teen drinking leads them to binge with friends, outside the careful watch of those who could help in case of overindulging. The perception of certain drugs as being ‘edgy’ simply because of their legal status draws in more young people to smoke weed. Patients who are told that the prescription pills are safe to take for long periods of time accept them to avoid pain, but suffer because of this misinformation. On all sides, we are in dire need of widespread facts and more complete awareness of the reality of drugs.

Biological causes, such as family history and genetic predisposition, are clearly important in this conversation. However, those are far from the only ’causes’ of addiction. There is not enough emphasis put onto the amount of weight that is given to social pressure. Socioeconomic status also has a huge role in this: “Addiction rates are higher in poor people… because they are more likely to experience childhood trauma, chronic stress, high school dropout, mental illness and unemployment, all of which raise the odds of getting and staying hooked.” It isn’t enough to say that addictions ‘don’t discriminate,’ because there are undoubtedly diversely-affected groups to consider, and to treat differently.
