Opioid Crisis Steps Need to Happen Now

Opioid Crisis - The Bergand Group

“At this point in the American epidemic, 145 people are dying every day from opioid overdoses, and there is no real solution in sight.” That may bother you, but does it drive you to any type of action? For most people, despite their good intentions, the answer is ‘no,’ and so the fatalities of the opioid crisis continue.

Ignorance and Judgment Fuel the Opioid Crisis

The crime of inaction is most heavy upon the shoulders of those who can make change, but who instead point fingers and argue, turning a discussion that should be geared toward saving lives into a political issue. The government argues about these things while people are dying and the opioid crisis isn’t improving at all.

Though many – to most – people know someone who is addicted or who has been affected by an addiction, it’s much easier to talk and yet do nothing than it is to do something. “The government needs to incentivize businesses to open up new locations, so people can have meaningful and sustainable jobs.” Towns where this epidemic has hit the hardest need aid to rebuild. If the current government does in fact have a plan to combat this large-scale issue, as they claim, then it must be more than just telling people to not use painkillers. Even if that were somehow successfully (historically, though, it hasn’t been), it would do nothing for those who are already suffering from an addiction.

So, what actions could those in positions of power take to reduce the opioid crisis with real, effective steps? For one thing, there is a desperate need to increase education about painkillers and the addictive hold that they have. Many people are given these prescriptions for varying reasons, but aren’t aware of how easily they may become dependent, or how using these pills may lead to other drugs. More than that, there are some who still see drug use of any kind as “moral failure” and who willfully turn away from those who are struggling with an addiction and who need help. This kind of ignorance is absolutely destructive to the overall efforts that we need to make.

Also problematic are those who go beyond just turning away from the problem. There are some who actively think that these people have some kind of moral failing, as mentioned above, and that their suffering is some kind of ‘just desserts’ for using drugs. This is utterly harmful and destructive thinking. We desperately need “an advertising campaign that focuses on educating the public about the realities of addiction to help those who are unaffected truly understand.” Without efforts to educate the people not affected, there will be those in the country who turn away willingly and without any issue, and this is detrimental to helping their fellow Americans to recover.

Finally, we need to stop “direct to consumer pharmaceutical ads.” How often do you see these in print and on TV? Pushing new medications is the American way, and it’s a big part of how we came to be in this situation in the first place. The current opioid crisis was built on the backs of these companies as they tried to make a profit based on untruths about their products. Now is the time for truth, change, and a stop to their enormous presence in our media.
