Opiates: The Dangerous Escape Attempt from Pain

Opiates and Opioid Addiction - The Bergand Group

Those who haven’t taken opiates before likely have no idea why they are so addictive (and dangerous). From the outside looking in, it can be impossible to see why anyone would continue to use these prescription pills. “The more opiates one imbibes, the more the brain adapts to counteract their effects,” which is a big part of the reason opioid addiction catches so many people in its thrall.

Pain Avoidance Can Lead to Opioid Addiction

The desire for an escape from pain is a natural one. However, to some degree, pain is just a natural – and sometimes productive – part of what it means to be human. Children learn not to touch a hot stove because of the sting of a burn. With opiates, there is a respite from pain, but it hardly lasts forever. Worse: it builds up the body’s resistance to the substance so that the person has to ingest more and more to find relief, which greatly increases the risk of an overdose. “Not only do regular users rarely get high, they experience increased pain, as the brain creates the state that drugs were used to address.”

It’s easy to understand wanting an escape from unpleasant or painful (physically or otherwise) things. Unfortunately, opioid addiction is the result of one method of trying to cope. People who couldn’t find relief anywhere else turn to these pills and find misery above all, and that misery leads to increased use of opiates and potentially-lethal consequences.
