Addiction Treatment Needs National Support

Addiction Treatment for Opioids - The Bergand Group

The current state of addiction in our country is still very bleak. Despite the progress that has been made, the opioid epidemic has caused widespread pain and suffering and calls for even more effective addiction treatment than ever. As doctors and professionals work hard to improve upon the current state of things, one has to wonder what some of the contributing factors were that brought us to this point.

The Opioids Crisis and Modern Addiction Treatment

Part of the problem is “a misunderstanding of how opioids work has now been joined with a misunderstanding of what to do with those who use them.” That is, since very few people understand what these types of drugs do to the body and mind, very few people have any idea of how to interact with (let alone help) those who are in the throes of an addiction. Those in the professional field, of course, are well-trained to aid those in need, but that is only one piece of a much larger and more problematic puzzle.

Really, the issue began with a long-standing belief throughout the community in everyone from patients to doctors that medication can do no wrong. Now we know that this is far from the truth. Prescription painkillers have proven to be incredibly addictive and deadly when they are left to run rampant on the person. Whether or not they lead to other drug use, such as heroin, these opioids are given by prescribers to those that they want to help… and have the opposite effect above all else.

Back when this issue was building up steam, “regulators noted the major rise in addiction and illegal use of synthetic opioids but failed to note how many millions were already hooked.” They began to notice a highly problematic trend but weren’t sure how to address it, let alone to treat it. As time has marched on, we seem no closer to solving this issue and in improving addiction treatment for any of those already affected or who could become addicted in the future.

Now we know that the painkillers are not even really doing the job for which they were originally offered. In a 2016 experiment done with rodents, researchers found that the opioids actually “prolong and enhance pain responses.” This should be dismaying for anyone, considering how much people have suffered in pursuit of lessening the pain they had to experience.

Where we are now has been described as a “public health crisis.” Addiction treatment as we know it is not enough to bring back more than “eleven million Americans” from the brink. Even those who have been forcibly removed from these pills find other ways to get the drugs into their system, whether through doctors in other states or the use of heroin. It is difficult for health professionals to thoroughly treat these numerous individuals and it is difficult for friends and family to figure out what they can do to help, if anything. Something has to change in a major way to prevent this long-standing tragedy from continuing indefinitely.
