Support Your Loved One During Their Outpatient Detox/Withdraw Symptom Management

Break the Stigma of Addiction: UNITE to Face Addiction - The Bergand Group

Many people view addicts as weak individuals who likely don’t have a home or a family. In reality this couldn’t be further from the truth. The population of addicts can include all types of people, including our coworkers, neighbors, and even our authority figures. While struggling with an addiction, addicts need support from their families and friends. Too often are people stigmatized and left unsupported, which leads to relapse and denial.

Outpatient Detox/Withdraw Symptom Management

The first step during the recovery process is detox. Addicts often have the option of doing an inpatient or outpatient detox/withdraw symptom management program. During this time, addicts are going through withdrawal symptoms and need the utmost support. Drug and alcohol detox guides patients through their withdrawal period with medical supervision. Detox is necessary for those who experience withdrawal symptoms when they are not using. For patients in their first step of drug and alcohol recovery, outpatient treatment programs are beneficial for their success.

Three Steps to Outpatient Detox/Withdraw Symptom Management

First, patients are evaluated. This is done through physical tests, which specify which drugs are present, and by looking at the patient’s vital signs. In this process, patients are also evaluated for psychological and emotional complications. Next, patients begin outpatient detox/withdraw symptom management, which may or may not include the use of medications, although it is quite common for medication to be administered. During this time clinicians inform patients of what to expect during the treatment and recovery period. The last step of the detoxification process is readying the patient for the recovery process, as detox deals only with physical aspect of drug dependence. In this step, clinicians refer patients to a team of psychiatrists and counselors who will provide support for the remainder of the recovery process.

Friend’s and Family’s Support During Outpatient Detox/Withdraw Symptom Management

While going through an outpatient detox/withdraw symptom management program, addicts need support and encouragement to work through the uncomfortable symptoms of withdrawal. Aside from getting cared for by doctors and psychiatrists, addicts need a supportive and understanding environment at home. Remember that addicts are dealing with the uncomfortable side effects of detox and withdrawal; this is not a time to discuss important matters or bring up sensitive subjects. Simply showing an addict that you’re there for them during their outpatient detox/withdraw symptom management program is sometimes all the comfort they need. Some activities you can do with someone going through an outpatient detox/withdraw symptom management program are:

  • Play cards, watch movies, listen to soothing music. All of these activities require little to no physical activity and if the addict is experiencing discomfort these activities might help take their mind off of it.
  • Provide them water and healthy food. Even though they might not want to eat or drink, make healthy food and water available and suggest they take small sips and bites throughout the day. Dehydration and hunger pains will only make the physical side of withdrawal worse.
  • Encourage them to remember why they’re detoxifying. Physical pain might make someone going through withdrawal want to use again, but having a supportive friend or family member there to remind them of why they’re going through this process will help them continue.
  • Suggest calming and relaxing exercises or activities to sooth physical discomfort. These activities can include yoga, slow walks, baths and acupressure.
  • Praise your loved one for making the decision to receive treatment. Deciding to begin the recovery process is extremely difficult. Showing your loved one that you are proud of them will give them the confidence they need to continue.

Oftentimes, friends and family members of an addict need to remember to care for themselves as well. There are many support groups, group therapy, and family therapy options available. Healing together can create a bond that will last a lifetime.
