So You Want to Get Help for your Addiction, Now What?

Intensive Outpatient Programs Bel Air

Deciding that you want to get counseling for your addiction is a very empowering decision but oftentimes it can be overwhelming. Many times people don’t know what to expect when they make their appointment. What will you discuss? Will your counselor listen to you in a safe and secure environment? To get the most out of your first session there are some things you can do to prepare.

  1. Fill out available paperwork. It’s a good idea to print, and fill out, any paperwork before going to your appointment. This ensures that your counselor will have the most up-to-date information at the start of your first session.
  2. Discuss addictions. If you are struggling with an addiction, tell your counselor during your first appointment. Many times patients are dealing with problems that have underlying issues. Your counselor will be able to help you more efficiently if they know about substances you might use – no matter how often you use them.
  3. Family history. Give your therapist an overview of your family history. Do your family members struggle with addiction? What is your relationship with your family like? Many times issues stem from childhood or family life and understanding this history will paint a clearer picture for your counselor.
  4. Be open. Your therapist is there to help you. Understand that seeking help will benefit to all aspects of your life. Being honest and open is important during therapy.
  5. Create a list. Creating a list of goals and prevalent issues will ensure that you don’t forget the main reasons you sought therapy. Being nervous during your first few sessions is normal and having a reference list will help you stay on track.

Always remember to be proud of yourself for seeking therapy as it can be a hard decision to make. Although counseling can sometimes hold a negative social stigma, it is extremely beneficial especially if you are struggling with an addiction. The Bergand Group is here to provide you with all of your counseling and psychotherapy needs.
