Managing and Becoming Familiar With Addiction Triggers

The Bergand Group - Substance Abuse Treatment

Many addictions start out as casual habits. What begins as drinking on the weekends as a way to “wind down” or smoking marijuana because your classmates are doing it slowly become crutches to get through stressful times. While receiving ongoing care for an addiction, it is important to understand what your addiction triggers are and the ways you can manage them.

Addiction triggers are stimuli that makes you want to use again. Many times triggers will figuratively bring the addict back to a time where they used and these memories might cause a slip-up for the recovering addict. For example, a recovering alcoholic might run into someone that they used to party with. This encounter might bring back memories of fun nights, carefree times, and that sense of self-confidence that might come with using. In these times, it is important to know what to do and who to talk to if thoughts of using do not subside.

Some common addiction triggers are:

  • People
  • Times of year
  • Locations
  • Stress

In order to manage your triggers, it is important to understand situations where the triggers arise. If going to a party triggers your desire to drink then skip it! If there is a certain date that is particularly stressful, surround yourself with positive people that day. The idea is that triggers will exist, but having power over those situations enables you to have control over the outcome.

Part of your ongoing addiction recovery program might be counseling and group therapy. Both of these are great tools at exploring and creating ways to manage addiction triggers. It is important to remember that you are not alone in this experience. Group therapy is a great place to discuss things like addiction triggers and tools to stay sober with people who are going through similar situations.
