Alcoholism is a Disease – TEDx Talks with Dia Mirza

Break the Stigma of Mental Illness and Addiction - The Bergand Group

Dia Mirza, an Indian model and actress, discusses the disease that is alcoholism. With a disease that holds such a social stigma, we must band together and move forward so that users can seek help. “Seeking help and intervention can help us arrest that disease.”

Mirza grew up with an alcoholic in her family but she didn’t realize that at the time. Although she witnessed “a loved one becoming increasingly dependent on alcohol” at age nine, it wasn’t until a friend supported her in this discovery at age 21. Blaming this on ignorance, she thinks that we all must become aware that alcoholism is a disease.

“Why did it take me 14 years to discover my ignorance? I think it happened because of three reasons. One is that I felt a great level of shame. How could I go to school and tell my best friend that a very dear loved one, somebody that I respected and looked up to, was letting me down? Was drinking. There was no information offered in school about alcohol addiction. It was when I was 21 years old that I met a friend who was aware of this fact that alcoholism is a disease, and he suggested that I checked this family member into rehab.”

The social stigma associated with alcoholism is that “If you are an alcoholic, you are a bad person.” Seeking counseling and discovering “the many truths about this illness” gave Mirza the strength to see that “hopelessness could be replaced with hope and that fear and resentment and anger could be replaced with love, respect and admiration.”

“The only shame we must feel is in choosing to stay in denial.”
