Individual Therapy in Baltimore County

Individual Therapy in timonium- The Bergand Group

These days, there are a number of options for addiction treatment, making it easier than ever to find the format that works the best for you. For those who prefer individual therapy in Baltimore County over group or other varieties, there are even variations within this one category in order to suit your unique needs.

Options for Individual Therapy in Baltimore County

Everyone has a different experience with substance abuse, and so everyone should have their own method of recovering. At the Bergand Group, we certainly realize this and keep it in mind when forming out various programs. As such, our experienced addiction recovery therapists use a variety of individual therapy techniques to examine and treat addiction. These include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization Reintegration (EDMR) therapy, and Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT).

The goal of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) individual therapy is to get the patient to recognize things that trigger their substance cravings. There are many potential situations that trigger substance cravings. Situational triggers such as being with friends who still use drugs can cause cravings, as can environmental stimuli. Mental health conditions such as stress are also triggers that can cause cravings.

Recovering addicts will inevitably be faced with some of these triggers during the course of their recovery, which is why cognitive behavioral therapy is so important. Working together with the therapist, the patients learns how to recognize their individual triggers, as well as techniques for avoiding them and, if they cannot be avoided, how to overcome them. This is just one of the many options for individual therapy in Baltimore County that is available to you.

The second, mentioned above, is Eye Movement Desensitization Reintegration. Also know as EMDR, this is an individual therapy technique uses the Adaptive Information Processing Model, which states that every individual has an innate tendency to move towards health as well as the ability to do so. However, negative and/or traumatic experiences or emotions that have not been processed by the brain and are stored in their memory can block this progress.

An individual may not be aware that this is occurring, but it can manifest itself in the form of unhealthy actions when these memories are triggered. EMDR uses eye-movement therapy to encourage the processing of these negative experiences or emotions, much in the way that rapid eye movements occur when the brain is in the REM stage of sleep in which it processes information. By processing this information, the blockage is removed and the patient is able to continue his or her natural progression towards health.

The third option for individual therapy in Baltimore County that is offered at our locations is called Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, or DBT. This is an individual therapy technique premised on the theory that emotionally charged situations can provoke stronger reactions in some individuals than in others, which can lead those individuals to a state of crisis and all of the choices and actions this entails. Using DBT, therapists teach skills that can help individuals see what provokes these reactions. Therapists and patients examine together how the patient’s belief system can reinforce these reactions, and engage in a reevaluation of his or her beliefs and thoughts in order to develop a more measured and thoughtful response system.
