4 Tips For Surviving New Year’s Eve Sober

4 Tips for Surviving New Year's Eve Sober - The Bergand Group

New Year’s Eve is a time to start fresh, look back on all of the things you learned, and, for many people, a time to drink more than ever. Being newly sober on New Year’s Eve can be intimidating and confusing. Most parties involve drinking, drugs and the people you used to use with. Don’t let New Year’s Eve be the time you slip up. With some planning and preparation you can maintain your sobriety and welcome in the new year.

  • Make a plan. Whether you are going to a party or staying in, make a plan and stick to it! Having a routine, or a plan, helps us maintain healthy habits. If you normally work out, meditate, or go for a walk every day, make sure you do these things. Don’t stray too much from your daily activities. If you will be attending a party that will have alcohol or drugs, decide how long you will stay and keep to your schedule. Having structure will give your mind time to relax.
  • Have an explanation. Many people will try and offer you alcohol, make sure you have an explanation as to why you’re turning it down. This doesn’t have to be long and detailed, a simple “No thank you, I’m not drinking,” should do the trick. If you do want to let people know that you kicked the habit, decide ahead of time how much you want to share with them.
  • Make a sobriety gratitude list. It is helpful to create a list to remember why you’re so grateful that you are sober. Being newly sober during a time when many people are drinking can be tough, but reminding yourself of all the great things that have come out of your sobriety will pull you through this.
  • Surround yourself with healthy people. Try and surround yourself with sober people. If you can’t, make sure that the people you do surround yourself with are healthy and not addicts. No one should be offering you drinks if you have already refused. These types of people are enablers and should be avoided at all costs.

Always have the number of your counselor and/or sponsor on hand. While they people might not be available all hours, they will help you stay on track. Planning extra counseling sessions surrounding a time like this is also helpful. Sobriety is an empowering lifestyle and becomes easier as time passes.
