Preparing For Your Individual Therapy Sessions

What Does Addiction Look Like? - The Bergand Group

When seeking professional help, especially in the form of individual therapy, it is often at a time where you feel that you’ve exhausted all other resources. While support from family and friends may make you feel like you’re not alone, that won’t solve problems completely. Individual therapy uses a variety of techniques to examine and treat addiction and mental illnesses. Preparing for your individual therapy sessions will ensure that you get started on the right path and that you get the most out of your sessions.

Tips to Prepare For Individual Therapy Sessions

Prepare Some Notes. Individual therapy sessions usually begin with a little bit of background information. Prepare some notes so that you don’t forget what you wanted to tell your therapist.

Bring a Journal. During your individual therapy session you might want to take notes or read from notes you may have prepared. The first or second session might be overwhelming and it’s best to remember what you talked about, and what advice your therapist gave you, so that you can be ready for your following sessions.

Set a Goal (or Two). Knowing where you want to go is much better than wandering aimlessly. The same applies for your individual therapy sessions. If you know where you want to go with your sessions, or at least have a goal or two ready, you will get the most out of individual therapy.

Gather all Pertinent Information. Your individual therapy sessions will begin with some paperwork. If you don’t have emergency contact numbers, your social security number, and other important information memorized, jot it down in your notes before you get there.

Begin With Compassion. Having compassion for yourself will help you during your individual therapy session. It is not unusual to become emotional, whether that is sadness, anger, or excitement, during your sessions, and this release of emotions is a great thing! If frustration arises, remember to hold yourself in a place of compassion.

Individual therapy sessions are extremely helpful when suffering from an addiction or mental illness. Gaining insight on yourself will guide you towards the right path. For more information on individual therapy in Baltimore and Harford County, get in touch with The Bergand Group.
