Maintaining Sobriety During the Holidays

Maintaining Sobriety During the Holidays- The Bergand Group

As the holidays approach many people are indulging in more than just great food. What goes hand-in-hand with holiday parties? Alcohol. In fact, many people who don’t tend to drink much throughout the year use alcohol during the holidays as a chance to unwind. Alcohol acts like a relaxant, and most people think ‘what better than to relax after the stress of buying presents, cooking, baking and fighting the holiday traffic?’ For those in recovery, the holidays can be even more stressful. With drink offerings around every corner, it is important to maintain sobriety during the holidays and decline drinks – even “just one.”

There are other things you can take part in, besides alcohol, to relax and unwind. If you are traveling during the holidays and visiting family or friends, plan ahead to stay on top of your sobriety. Family and friends want the best for you and they will often do whatever they can to ensure that you stay sober. Creating a “toolbox,” or plan to stay sober, will help you maintain sobriety during the holidays.

Tips for Maintaining Sobriety During the Holidays

  • Seek meditation, yoga, or fitness classes to attend. This keeps your mind busy and will reduce stress.
  • Bring comforting things such as music, pillows, journals, books and anything else that you can use to stay grounded.
  • Be honest in your sobriety even though it can be hard. If people know that you are in recovery they will often refrain from offering you drinks.
  • Pack your medications and refill any that might be running out while you are away. Running out of medication while on vacation is stressful. If you do run out of medication call your pharmacy to see if they will fax the prescription to a pharmacy nearby.
  • Plan activities during the day as people tend to refrain from drinking or using drugs until the evening. Getting together a group of people to play football or go for a hike will keep you busy and make your body feel great.
  • Seek extra counseling or group therapy sessions during this time of year. Your counselor, and people in your group therapy, understand what you are going through and might have helpful ideas on how to stay sober during the holidays.
