Individual Therapy or Group Therapy?

Individual Therapy or Group Therapy - The Bergand Group

Once you decide that it’s time for a change, once you make that commitment to battle your addiction, you may not know where to turn. There is a variety of treatment options, after all, and it’d be hard to know what your preferences are if you haven’t tried any of them before. Whether you are most comfortable in group or individual therapy, there are health professionals who will help you to find the right fit for your recovery experience.

Group or Individual Therapy: Which Is Better?

Though both types of therapy sound self-explanatory, learning a little more about them can help to make the choice a little easier. “Groups benefited the members emotionally due to supporting one another in shared experiences,” while individual therapy allows for a more intimate, one-on-one session where no one but the patient and the professional are involved. Some even engage in a mix of both types so that there is a ‘social’ aspect, but so they also are able to receive more individualized attention.

The beauty of the best addiction treatment centers is that the people who work there are able to effectively determine the right fit for each person. They have see so many people pass through that they are able to sit down with you and soundly determine the program that would best help you to reach recovery. They work with you in order to assess your situation and gather your thoughts before working to find the best fit for you during your time in the facility.

If you opt for group therapy, then you’ll be working in a group with others in similar situations, alongside one or more therapists. It “assures individuals that they are not alone and that other individuals share similar problems and struggles” and “offers the opportunity to both receive support from others and to give support to others.” These are critical benefits within working to recover from an addiction and cannot be overlooked. In addition, it provides the patients with a method of developing stronger social and communicative skills, since they are likely interacting with others in the group and with its leaders.

What individual therapy offers, then, is that greater focus and attention on them alone. There is greater confidentiality or privacy, stronger focus on the individual patient, more flexibility with scheduling of meetings, and it may also be a better fit for those who are naturally reserved or shy. It can allow a person to open up more fully since they aren’t among others who, in their perception, perhaps, may judge them for their shared stories and experiences. Individual therapy fosters a working relationship between patient and professional, one that is secure and focused on that person alone.

Both types of counseling offer their own benefits and come with their own drawbacks. Put simply, both are excellent and can work wonders for someone struggling with an addiction, but the answer of ‘which is better’ depends on the person’s needs. Therefore, the best option is to give both a try and to decide then which seems like the best fit for you. “Deciding on which one to engage in is a personal choice that depends on one’s personal issues, goals, and the types of therapists/groups that are available.”
