Individual Therapy Isn’t So Scary

Individual Therapy - The Bergand Group

There’s no question that therapy and counseling can be of great benefit to people for various reasons. “Everyone stands to gain from reflecting on their lives and improving their coping skills.” Those who are working to recover from an addiction to alcohol or drugs are not exempt from this group, and in fact should absolutely opt for some kind of counseling in order to heal more completely. Whether that person chooses group or individual therapy, however, depends on his or her situation.

It’s easy to be skeptical of the benefits of going to see a therapist. A lot of people don’t believe that there will be real results while others are simply uncomfortable with the idea of opening up to a stranger. Particularly with those who have addictions, it can be massively difficult to take that first step to see a counselor… and then to return regularly.

It’s true that this isn’t easy, but it is necessary. Therapy offers enormous benefits to anyone and everyone who might attend. Within addiction, a person can choose between a group setting or individual therapy in order to make themselves feel as comfortable as possible. One automatic advantage is having someone to speak with who is “outside” of their normal circles so that the patient can get a fresh perspective on not only what he or she should do to recover from an addiction, but also how to address some of the possible causes of that addiction in the first place. “Therapists give you… a neutral relationship with no personal history,” which can be invaluable in these situations.

So, who might benefit from individual therapy sessions? Patients who aren’t able to face the truth of their substance abuse, patients who want to change their habits to better their loved ones, patients who just need someone to talk through their difficulties with… along with many others. There aren’t many reasons that a person wouldn’t be qualified for this type of therapy, though some do prefer “less scrutiny” in the form of a group format. This is also perfectly acceptable and has worked well for some who suffer from an addition.

Within individual treatment, there are a handful of different kinds of formats depending on what the person’s goals are. Cognitive behavioral therapy allows the person to change their ways of thinking, to recognize triggers and/or cravings so that they can be most easily avoided or dealt with. Eye Movement Desensitization Reintegration can help the person to work through previous, traumatic experiences that may be preventing them from recovery, or which might have lead to addiction in the first place. Dialectic Behavioral Therapy examines a patient’s belief systems and emotions in order to develop a more measured and thoughtful response system. Finally, Psychodynamic psychotherapy furthers personal development and works through dysfunctional relationships in a person’s life.

Clearly, depending on what is most difficult to overcome for the individual, there are a number of options available. Working one on one with a professional addiction counselor can be an enormous boon to recovery when it can be so highly personalized. Speaking with someone just to determine what might be the best next course of action for you or someone you care about is better than taking no action at all and will likely be easier than you expect.
