Individual Therapy Helps Reach Recovery

Individual Therapy and Recovery - The Bergand Group

There are a number of ways to try and combat an addiction. One of the more common options is individual therapy, which can be highly effective in helping an addicted individual to work through the motivations that may have lead them to the gates of substance abuse and beyond.

Choosing Between Group or Individual Therapy

If you don’t mind spending a lot of time working with a single professional, then individual therapy may be one of the best options for you. This kind of counseling allows you to spend time speaking with one other person, with a counselor who has a lot of experience in recovery from addiction, and who will act as a guide and ally during this process. He or she will listen when you need it, offer advice when you need it, and offer suggestions and strategies for moving forward from a period of substance abuse.

Though group therapy sessions are also beneficial in many ways, they can be a little intimidating for those who are, perhaps, a bit more shy, or who don’t want to involve others in their recovery experience. Both varieties offer their own benefits, but one of the pros of individual therapy is that it does keep things to a one-on-one environment, eliminating some of the larger social anxiety that can come with discussing sensitive and personal stories within a larger group.

“A lot of recovering addicts also prefer individual sessions to maintain their privacy, especially if they feel uncomfortable sharing their experiences with a group.” Since, again, both come with their own advantages, some people will start in sessions of individualized treatment and then work up to moving into a group setting. It takes people different amounts of time to reach this level of comfort, and some may never want to engage in this larger style of treatment, and that is fine, too. The most important thing is to find success for each patient, and not all of those methods will be the same, or even similar.

Within individual therapy, the counselor, who likely has a lot of experience in this arena, will “help a recovering addict focus and deal with the root cause of their addiction on a more personal level and teach them techniques on how to cope with the issues that caused them to turn to drugs in the first place.” If the patient is more able to recognize and accept those problems that helped to cultivated the addiction in the first place, then he or she will be better-equipped to reduced these harmful behaviors. For example, if a parent or guardian had an addiction, that is likely part of why the current patient developed substance abuse issues of their own.

Most treatment centers that you enter into in pursuit of a healthier lifestyle will have some kind of counseling available. Whether you prefer group or individual therapy, you will be able to work with professionals to determine the most effective course of action for you and your unique situation. If you or someone you care about is looking for help in recovering from an addiction of any kind, then contact The Bergand Group.
