Individual Therapy Sessions Work While Addiction Research Moves Ahead

In exploring what may make adolescents more prone to suffer from addiction, it seems obvious that the answer would involve the developing brains of these young people.  Recent research has suggested that there is more to the story and they hope that investigating this further may lead to breakthroughs in how these addictions at a young age are best treated.

Consider Individual Therapy Sessions as Developments Proceed

One of the bottom lines that these experts have founds is that “the ability to produce (or synthesize) new proteins, regulated by the molecule eIF2, accounts for adolescents’ hypersensitivity to both cocaine and nicotine.”  Therefore, it’s specifically issues related to this protein that can lead to more instances of addictions at a young age, depending on the connections established between the substances and established neural pathways.  Put simply, adolescents are less able to resist the effects that drugs and alcohol can have on these particular neurons.

This period of “heightened sensitivity” to substances means, of course, larger dangers for teenagers who may be exposed to them.  Fortunately, when working through trials with mice, researchers found that if they increased the levels of this protein (of eIF2) in the adolescent-age mice, they were able to become more resistant to the effects of addictive substances.  They believe that this concept can potentially be applied to humans so that they “can rejuvenate brain activity” and establish more effective ways to combat addiction within the younger population.

Recovery begins with understanding, which many are able to find within individual therapy sessions.  Patients can’t sit around and wait for answers while scientists work on adapting the concept of increasing eIF2 levels in those struggling with addiction.  In the meantime, there are a number of potential solutions, from cognitive behavioral therapy to psychodynamic psychotherapy, to help that person establish a healthier lifestyle and also to really begin on the road to sobriety.  Just as understanding what neural pathways make younger people more susceptible to certain substances is crucial in developing better recovery from addiction, making sure that those affected are as knowledgeable as possible about what is happening, psychically, as well as what their options are, is crucial.

Individual therapy sessions are highly effective because of the options they provide, offering different formats so that the patient is able to be matched with a program that is most helpful for them, and not a generalized therapy format.  Too often, those working toward recovery are faced with a “one-size-fits-all” therapy that doesn’t do much to really help their personal growth.  The Bergand Group offers a variety for this reason, providing several individual therapy techniques so that each person can receive attentive and practical care.  Because addiction, for some, is exacerbated by other mental disorders, the dual diagnosis functioning that observes and attends to both is what many need to really progress toward health and wellness.

If you or a loved one are struggling through a traditional rehabilitation program, it may be that individual therapy sessions of one format or another is what is really needed.  Hopefully, we’ll see the results of the eIF2  studies before long to more thoroughly address issues of addiction in both young people and adults.  For more information about different kinds of individual therapy sessions, get in touch with The Bergand Group. The Bergand Group is Maryland’s leading addiction recovery center, and offers support for those struggling with addiction and mental health issues.
