Harford Addiction Awareness Night - The Bergand Group

The Harford County Health Department and The Bergand Group have partnered to host an evening for friends, family, and professionals involved in the treatment and prevention of addiction and substance use.

The evening will begin with Dr. Julie Stancliff presenting the Maryland Opiate Overdose Response Program. This is an interactive educational training designed to teach family, friends, and loved ones of opiate users how to respond to a heroin or prescription opiate overdose with a life-saving medication called Naloxone.

To celebrate the opening of their new outpatient addiction treatment center in Harford County, The Bergand Group will follow with a presentation on their Therapeutic and Psychiatric Interaction with Twelve Step Programs. The Bergand Group’s Medical Director, Dr. John Steinberg, and Clinical Director, Dr. Paul Giannandrea will each present one hour of continuing education credits for health profession- als. Family and friends concerned or affected by addiction are welcome to attend and should find the presentation very informative.


  • 3:30 PM – Welcome
  • 4-5 PM – Naloxone Overdose Response Training – Dr. Stancliff
  • 5-6 PM – The Complimentary Nature of Therapy and Twelve Step Programs and the Role for Each in a Patient’s Recovery – Dr. Steinberg
  • 6-7 PM – The Twelve Steps of Recovery as a Template for the Phase Appropriate Psychiatric Treatment of the Chemically Dependent Patient – Dr. Giannandrea


Dr. Julie Stancliff is a Psychiatrist specializing in Addiction at the Harford County Health Department, University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center and Sheppard Pratt Health System. She is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. John Steinberg is a co-founder and the Medical Director of The Bergand Group. He is certified in Addiction Medicine and served as President of the Maryland Society of Addiction Medicine from 1990 through 2005. Dr. Steinberg was the first head of the division of Addiction Medicine at GBMC and has treated addiction for over 25 years.

Dr. Paul Giannandrea is a co-founder and the Clinical Director of The Bergand Group. He is a Psychiatrist certified in Addiction Medicine and previously served as the director of the University of Maryland Medical Center’s Outpatient Clinic and the medical director of Pathways Treatment Center in Annapolis. Dr. Giannandrea has also treated addiction for over 25 years.
