Family History of Addiction Not Always Understood

Family History of Addiction - The Bergand Group

Those who have a family history of addiction to drugs or alcohol will be at a higher risk for “inheriting” those issues of substance abuse. At the moment, in an effort to better prepare and help these people, “researchers are searching for the gene or genes responsible for addiction that we see in families who have addiction across multiple generations.”

The Continued Research into Family History of Addiction

There’s no question that people with a family history are at a higher risk, but many people may not even realize that a relative has, or had, this issue, and therefore proceed into (for example) social drinking with no idea of how it can escalate. If they are aware of the dangers associated with their own drinking, then they may at least hesitate before taking their very first sip.

Luckily, he National Institute on Drug Abuse is currently exploring a way to better understand the types of genes that play a role in all this so that they can better inform those at risk. Education and awareness are so critical to avoiding not only substance abuse, but everything from that first opportunity to develop an addiction to a possible overdose. As with everything addiction-related, it’s impossible to aid those who are suffering without learning everything that we can and then spreading that information throughout the country.

It isn’t as if parents, or even grandparents and other relatives, keep information about the genetic dangers from younger generations. Even if there has been a family history of addiction for generations, people within that family may not know about it, or may dismiss their own habits as normal. This makes it all the more dangerous, since they, and younger family members, could have run-ins with substance use that are more of a threat to them, considering the history.

If NIDA is able to identify the related genes, though, then they – and health professionals – will be able to point out the “family inheritance pattern to the patient” and hopefully help them along a safer path, one that is sober in order to avoid addiction. Warning those at risk of a genetic predisposition can at least help them to stay informed and make smart choices based on what they have been told about their own risk factors.
