What is a DUI / DWI Educational and Aftercare Program?

Three people looking at one another talking - DUI and DWI Educational and Aftercare Program - The Bergand Group

Most states have separate “driving under the influence” and “driving while intoxicated” offenses. These terms refer to an impaired state where a person has consumed alcohol, prescription medication, or illicit drugs.  A DUI and DWI educational and aftercare program can help people who have been charged with DUI or DWI offenses.

What are DUI/DWI Charges?

There are several consequences for being convicted of a DUI/DWI. If you have been convicted for your first offense or a misdemeanor compared to a felony, you will likely face fines up to $2000 and license suspension for 180 days. Your vehicle could also be impounded at this time.

Second offenses could face up to $4000 in fines and/or one year of imprisonment. The penalties become more severe (up to a $10,000 fine and 2-10 years of imprisonment) for subsequent charges.

The Difference Between a DUI and a DWI

DUI/DWI stands for Driving under the Influence or Driving While Intoxicated. A DUI is defined as driving with more than 0.08% blood alcohol concentration. A DWI is essentially the same crime but involves being intoxicated in some other manner, such as through drugs.

What are DUI and DWI Educational and Aftercare Programs, and How do They Help?

A person convicted of a DUI/DWI will have a permanent mark on their criminal record, one of the most critical documents for life and career prospects. This is why DUI and DWI educational programs are important: they can help educate drivers about how to avoid impaired driving in the future and provide resources on the legal consequences of impaired driving.

For example, some programs require the completion of community service before one’s case is complete. This provides the individual with the opportunity to make amends for doing something illegal while also providing much-needed assistance to non-profit organizations in their area.

Aftercare programs help provide resources for those who have already been through the DUI/DWI legal process.
